This article focuses on volunteer work as a mandatory hold on a public high school in Canada in September of 2012. With the requirement, the students had better academic performace, and less anti-social behavior.

This article focuses on the study of the attitudes of community responsibility of students who volunteer. While the volunteer was mandatory at first, towards the end the continued to do the volunteer work even after the requirement.

Annotations

The first annotation is not quite researched based but more testimonial. Earlier this year a woman regrew a fingertip through the help of stem cells. Though they did not call it stems cells, due to the fact that it is associated negatively to the human mind, it was regenerative medicine. With that being a step towards the betterment of this science I feel it is only time until we can regrow organs.

The second annotation deals with the facts of stem cells and how they work. To begin the stem cell is an unspecialized cell that has the capability to renew until it is no longer needed. It also has the ability to become almost any type of cell from organ to tissue based. They only need a living host to do their magical work.

10000 Solutions

For my Ten Thousand solutions I would like to introduce my own reasoning and solution into helping fix the economy. First thing is first those who earn a ridiculous salary to do their jobs in office should be cut down dramatically. Why should a Public figure be paid so much money to just throw away when we could be putting it towards something much more useful. How about we control our boarders more and give Americans their jobs back. I know this is gonna catch me on fire especially in college and I am sure lots of people are going to use their one defense for this which is , '' you are a racist against Hispanics". This is not true at all, yes I am against an illegal immigrant crossing into the Unites States unlawfully, which by the way is a federal offense, and taking jobs that could be used by Americans. I am not against immigration as long as it is legal and done the right way not the illegal way. Also those who immigrate illegally do not spend their earnings here in the United States but back in their own country of origin, so tell me how that is to boost our economy when there is no spending here but in other countries? Another way to let the economy grow is not have the government pour millions of dollars into dying businesses, to let the economy grow and expand some things need to die so that others can grow. Here is an example, when a tree dies the little sprouts underneath can now get sunlight and begin to grow, those little sprouts can then maybe grow into big trees themselves, so the death of that one tree gave way so that more trees could grow to be just as big if not bigger then the original.

Paper 3 proposal, Clarissa Campbell

I decided to write my paper on welfare fraud.  The government uses so much money every year to help the people who “need” it.  I do believe that there are some people who do get into situations where they do actually need help, but I also think that there are many people who get the help but do not really need it.  They take advantage of the system so that they do not have to work or so they can stay home and many spend the money on things that are not necessities and not what the money was meant for.  Many also are regular drug and alcohol users and use the money for that cause.  I have several ideas to combat this issue.  One idea is that if it is for a physical medical reason, to require annual physicals and ensure that they are still unfit for the workforce.  Another idea that could help to prevent the drug use is to require drug tests for everyone prior to them receiving benefits.  I know that some states are already doing this to an extent, and that it is not having the desired effect.  For example, Arizona is requiring tests to people who are believed to be doing the drugs, but only if there is reasonable belief which means that not everyone is tested. Other states are testing everyone, but not getting expected results, and I believe this is because the people being tested are falsifying tests.  Kits and instructions are sold in smoke shops all over the United States.  I have several ideas to fix this which will help to make the testing more effective.  The audience will be the general public, but more targeted toward those in charge of these systems in hopes that they will hear my ideas and consider putting them into place.

10,000 Solution

For my third paper, I decided to do something a little different. Instead of choosing a problem within my major, I decided to choose something to help the community. For my communications class, we were assigned to do a community service and present about if afterwards. I thought that it was pointless because I felt that I should not be forced to do something I do not want to do but since it was a grade, I had to. Our group decided on the Andre House which is a soup kitchen as well as a help office for the homeless. I live in West Phoenix so I see homeless people every day and never thought much of it. After participating in the Andre House, it opened my eyes to the lack of volunteers they receive. It also taught me to be very grateful after hearing what these individuals have gone through. So my proposal for the 10,000 solutions is that Arizona State University students should be required to complete 10 community service hours throughout an entire school year. Although it may not seem like a lot, if you think of the amount of students ASU has enrolled, the numbers add up. It helps students learn life lessons as well as help those who are less fortunate around us. The way it can be enforced is through account holds, like the ones they have for freshmen student advising. You can remove this hold after you show your counselor that you have completed the certain amount of hours. I know that many high schools now require community service hours as a part of the criteria for graduation which I think we should be a part of. My projected audience is to faculty, staff, and students of Arizona State University.

Paper 3 Topic

For the third paper I would really like to work on the waiting list for organ transplants via genetic engineering. This would then stem to cloning for the purpose of harvesting organs for the betterment of health. I find this area of science to be extremely fascinating and would love to see it expand in the future. My solution is simply cloning humans so that if one or another person needs a liver or heart there will not be long waiting list for potential donors. The audience for this project would seem to be anyone who would be or is looking into cloning for actual medical purposes not just for the fun of it. My grandmother who is on awaiting list for a liver transplant will most likely not get and will pass away in the near future. This got me to thinking if there were clones of people who were kept in some sort of cryosleep where they would feel no pain and not know that they were alive it would be fine for one of them to be used to harvest organs. Because in the current system we have if one is not rich or famous a lot of them will be not have the transplants need to save their lives. That is base for my reasoning to do the third paper on genetic engineering. I feel that this is not often viewed as potential to save many lives for the sole basis that some people are afraid of the outcome of cloning humans for organs but if given time I think that it could save several people from the heartbreak of losing a loved one from some like a faulty liver.
