I decided to write my paper on welfare fraud. The government uses so much money every year
to help the people who “need” it. I do
believe that there are some people who do get into situations where they do
actually need help, but I also think that there are many people who get the
help but do not really need it. They
take advantage of the system so that they do not have to work or so they can
stay home and many spend the money on things that are not necessities and not
what the money was meant for. Many also
are regular drug and alcohol users and use the money for that cause. I have several ideas to combat this
issue. One idea is that if it is for a physical
medical reason, to require annual physicals and ensure that they are still
unfit for the workforce. Another idea
that could help to prevent the drug use is to require drug tests for everyone
prior to them receiving benefits. I know
that some states are already doing this to an extent, and that it is not having
the desired effect. For example, Arizona
is requiring tests to people who are believed to be doing the drugs, but only
if there is reasonable belief which means that not everyone is tested. Other
states are testing everyone, but not getting expected results, and I believe
this is because the people being tested are falsifying tests. Kits and instructions are sold in smoke shops
all over the United States. I have
several ideas to fix this which will help to make the testing more
effective. The audience will be the
general public, but more targeted toward those in charge of these systems in
hopes that they will hear my ideas and consider putting them into place.
Clarissa I really liked your topic and hope that you can get it. In it you mentioned that some people who receive welfare use it to purchase items that are not necessary or might be consider luxury items. You also mentioned that some people are drug users and are falsifying test to try and game the system. Now undoubtedly this is true but I do not think it is done to the extent that the media and some politician would have us to believe. I remember earlier this year I think the Florida government began to administer these drug test to people on welfare to catch those on drugs but their efforts were to no avail when they found that a small fraction of people on welfare where drug users. The governor of Florida his wife worked for the company who made these test and so he stood to gain financially from these test. So before you begin to thwart the devilish plans of these drug users I would try to get more concrete evidence. Other than that I hope you will do well on this project.
ReplyDeleteOur ten thousand solutions ideas is somewhat similar and I fee like you like mine is starting to get into a touchy subject which I feel is good, especially for new young minds that are just starting out as citizens and they need to know the issues. I agree with all your ideas that yes there are some people really need help and can not do anything to help it and they deserve the help they receive but then there are those who just waste their lives sucking off the government's push over stance but those are the people that are running this country dry. I feel as though this is a great solution to today's situation.
